I have raved about this market which is one of the true treasures of London. Now it is under threat.
The market started a few years ago as a one off gathering of organic producers ( there were about 10 stalls ) it was so successful that they began to hold the market once a month, then once a week, now it is held every Friday and Saturday and is packed with nearly 100 stalls, shops and stands
This is no farmers market, it sells everything from the most wonderous fruit and vegetables to organic Pork from the Ginger Pig company and Wild beef and Boar. There are spanish produce shops, stalls selling organic coffees, breads, chocs and cheeses. There is also a branch of the estimable Neals Yard Dairy which sells the finest butter, milk, Yoghurt and stuff in town.
They are planning to redevelop the area ( more bloody loft apartments ) and scrap the market.
We need to stop this or we will lose one of the things that makes this city truly special. The Times suggested a middle class picket line "what do we want? - Wild Beef" "When do we want it - Just after the fish course please" but I think it is important we do something. Not just sit by and let it be bulldozed
Can I urge all of you who live in the city and don't go there to visit and then write to the local council asking at least for the safe relocation of this market.
Those Chowhounders outside the city who have not been there are missing out and should make sure to put it on your itinerary ( it is only a stones throw from The Tower after all ) you wont be disappointed.
Thanks for listening
