My boiled icing turned into marshmallow...HELP

I tried making a boiled icing for the first time yesterday and maybe I beat it too long, but the consistency and taste was marshmallowey and that was definitely not what i was going for. Please tell me the proper consistency and what I did wrong. I boiled the sugar syrup to the softball stage and slowly drizzled into stiffly beaten egg whites, but I didn't know how long to beat because the consistency didn't seem thick enough for icing so I kept beating and beating and ended up with marshmallow.
