Last month I visited Big Sur twice on day trips to get a sense of visitor activity and to find out who was open for business. I made a point to try out restaurants that I've not been to before. On May 11, I had breakfast at Ripplewood Cafe.
The drive south from Carmel was easy with not too many cars on Hwy 1. Big Sur was gorgeous and green from the winter's rainfall and Ripplewood Cafe was bright with colorful flowers.
Famous for its pancakes, this was not a hard decision. I went for the full stack of blueberry pancakes served with warm, genuine maple syrup. Pancakes are so popular here, they can be ordered on the lunch menu too.
These exploded with blueberries. Just enough pancake batter to hold what must have been close to a basket of berries together. I have no idea how the short order cook even turns these over. When I tried to lift the top one to slide a pat of butter in between, these fragile pancakes fell apart. But that's a good thing, so tender and delicate, just bursting with fresh blueberries. They tasted so natural without the bitterness of commercial leaveners, these are definitely from scratch. Highly recommended!
I sat indoors in the rustic dining room. There's also a counter towards the rear.
Many customers chose patio seating.
Did I mention that everything is green and growing?
