Blood Oranges

I picked up a bag of blood oranges yeterday at the Hillcrest (San Diego) farmers market. $1 for 7 smallish oranges, probably about a pound in total weight, maybe a little over. Squeezed them this morning for Mimosas. They were not quite as tart as some of the blood oranges I've had in the past and they made a nice, slightly acidic juice that was pleasantly sweet. The color was pretty glorious too. Out of the 7 oranges, 6 of them had full, deep and intense color, yielding a truly stunning garnet colored juice. As you might guess, they made a really gorgeous dusty rose colored Mimosa ;-).

I also had a couple of wayward Valencias and a Honey Tangerine that had been rolling around in the fridge that I juiced and added to the Blood Oranges. That addition hardly changed the color of the Blood Orange juice, the color was that brilliant. Not a bad $1 investment.

Can't guarantee the vendor will have the same deal next Sunday, but if anyone feels the urge check it out, the vendor is up against the DMV building, next to the mushroom lady. They also were selling Meyer Lemons, Persian Limes and Cherimoyas.
