Bleach usage in the kitchen

So I grew up cleaning my work space with dish soap or citrus slices.

However, looking into a few different books, people tend to suggest bleach. Is it safe to use on your cutting board? Do you spray it, wipe it, then rinse it well? What about other work spaces? Do you spray, wipe, and rinse off with a wet paper towel?
