a new tool to get you where you need to go to find that Big Sur chow, because you can't eat it if you can't get there:

MONTEREY/SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTIES – Caltrans District 5 has created a toll-free hotline that will provide information about traffic on Highway 1. The hotline will cover an area of the Big Sur coast highway from Cambria to Carmel.

Motorists are advised to consult the hotline before driving on Highway 1 in the Big Sur area.
[road contions may spur closures at any time of year. There are no available detours]

COPY and PASTE THIS NUMBER:The toll-free phone number is (888) 836-0866.

The hotline will be updated as needed with information about construction, traffic delays, and or road closures. “With the rainy season approaching, we are pleased to be able to provide this service to the traveling public,” said District Director Rich Krumholz.

Caltrans reminds motorists that 'we’re here to get you there.' "

While this may not be directly related to actual chow, the Highway 1 route is very popular with out-of-area chowhounders who are unfamiliar with the extreme isolation and primative nature (which seasons the available chow with the spice of exoticity) of this road route. There are NO detours available, so road condtion knowledge is a must for this territory, to avoid dissapointment and MISSED reservations!
