This report just in from 5th Avenue in Park Slope:
There is a little gourmet food shop there called Bierkraft which is very impressive.
They have a whole wall of cold cases full of beers from all over the world, with very strong suits in American microbrew and Belgian gourmets (some of which are like $9 a bottle!)
Across from the beers are shelves with all sorts of the usual intriguing sauces and crackers, etc. No big deal, I thought, until I came upon a display of these potato chips called "Zapps," which is a Louisiana brand. I'd never seen it before, but they had all sorts of cool flavors. We tried "Cajun Dill," which was a big hit.
Finally, they had a fantastic cheese counter -- and they're happy to slice you small sections. We got some of that super truffle cheese (only other place we found it was Fairway) and a slice of rosemary Manchego -- so you can see what kind of cheese league they are playing in.
What can I say? The place blew me away in terms of quality. I mean, there are lots of little joints in Brooklyn that are putting on the chowhound airs with a few trays of olives and some jars of stuff, but this place really did have things to delight.
