Bert's, no Ernie for classic diner breakfast in Vancouver

We hit Bert's on Main for a breakfast in August with the little niece and co. It's been on my list for ages. We lucked out and went the week they were celebrating their 62nd anniversary and had bottomless coffee for five cents (!).

Bert's is the kind of place I think about when I think diner. They have a great website (which is kind of unusual for a place like this) at with some old photos and so on. It is quite large, seating more than a hundred at capacity but it is separated into a couple rooms so not barn like. The first room I gather is the original and is the most classic diner looking with naugahyde booths etc. We sat in the second room by the window which was great.

Service here is also pretty classic. Squint hard and you can almost see the beehive hairdos :-). Don't be surprised if you get called "hon" at some point.

Menu is hard core "Western" breaky, with eggs and pancakes front and centre. Prices are low. Coffee is hot and plentiful but not any particular brand or roast. Don't expect any lattes or whatnot, but they do offer decaf brewed. I'm tempted to swing by and try one of their "gourmet" burgers for lunch. But in the meantime, I'm very happy to say that Bert's is just the sort of place I like for breakfast: well priced, solid food and the right amount of dinery ambiance.
