Berliner Döner Kebab "Scharfe Sauce" hot sauce

Bada Bing | Nov 1, 201402:09 PM     27

In my so-far-futile endeavor in the USA to replicate the Döners I used to enjoy in Berlin 25 years ago, I am thinking about making my own sauce. But it's been so long. I recall that usually the vendors would ask if you want "scharfe" or not, or there'd be condiment squirt bottles there for you to use. The sauce was red. I don't fancy the white yogurt sauces so much.

Is that sauce identical to harissa sauce, or maybe something else? I doubt those vendors made the sauce from scratch, so it must be available somewhere at retail.
