My spouse and I ate at the eagerly anticipated Ben's Deli on Central Ave. in Scarsdale last night (opening night). They have some serious issues to work out:
The wait staff were very poorly trained. They seemed not to know how to work the computers. Orders were getting lost. The kitchen was badly backed up and it took way too long between courses - over half an hour to get a sandwich after the soup was cleared. Soups were delivered without spoons and the request for spoons took over five minutes. One soup came out hot and one soup cold. Dishes and silverware were periodically crashing to the floor in the background somewhere. The phrase "I apologize" was in constant use all around us.
The food had serious issues as well. The corned beef was not tender, cut poorly and rubbery. And wasn't that tasty. "Overstuffed" sandwiches were not particularly overstuffed. The mushroom barley soup was gelatinous - and not in a good way. The stuffed cabbage was covered in oddly flavored tomato sauce (almost like marinara sauce - not the traditional sweet and sour flavor).
The menu was voluminous but difficult to read. Different courses or choices were on all different pages and it was hard to figure out how to put together a meal. Soups were only served in a large bowl size - not cup size if you wanted a smaller portion. Alcoholic beverages were prominently featured on several pages - those were not hard to find.
On the bright side - the sour pickles were very good as was the cole slaw (and those were free). The matzoh ball soup was also very good.
I really hope that over time these problems can be ironed out because I was so looking forward to a good kosher deli in the area.
