Stuffed myself silly this weekend at Bengal Cafe's lunch buffet. So good!
The buffet on this past Saturday included rice, daal, mixed vegetables, "sweet and sour" eggplant, chicken, and beef. Salad on the side and sweet rice for dessert.
Hands down, eggplant wins best of show. So much flavor... a bit vinegary, a bit salty, very creamy flesh, good spice mix. I need to learn how to make this dish. Beef was tender; they know how to cook it to make the fat soft. Mmmm. I think it had ginger and anise. The sweet rice was interesting. I've never had anything like it; it was bright orange, cold, not too sweet, and looked like regular cooked rice (i.e. not a rice pudding). Forgive me for butchering the name, but it sounded like "jorba"--does that sound familiar to anyone?
I could tell all the food was cooked in small quantities, from the depth of spices and the freshness of ingredients. And from how proud the two staffers (owners?) were of their food--they explained everything and were happy when I liked the food. Last Saturday, when the buffet was cancelled because they were busy cooking for a special banquet, they still offered to make me some lunch. Really nice people, great food.
