Belgano/Noe Valley

Jimbo | Jul 25, 200511:28 PM

Belgano, the chocolate/gelato shop on the corner of 24th/ Sanchez been open for about a week [replacing the short lived Stonehouse Olive Oil store].It carries Leonidas [Belgium] chocolates and Caio Bella gelatos [They are the folk in the Ferry Building]. I chatted with who I took to be an owner and strongly recommended[ jovially, but dead serious] that he also carry our local, beloved XOX chocolates as a "service to the neighborhood". He said that the XOX guy had actually stopped by, but that the store was "contractually obligated" to Leonidas. While Leonidas is a fine imported chocolate and, at least in Brussels, a somewhat better value than the more famous Godiva and others,it seems a real "miss" in terms of the neighborhood. If every XOX fan on this side of town would ask, maybe he'd get the message... The gelato looks as inticing as it does in the Ferry Building and is equally as expensive, but any time I can get "Riso" my heart warms! Belgano was doing a brisk gelato business over the HOT weekend, so they timed their opening well. Despite signs in the closed store windows during the transition indicating that the coming chocolatier replacement would be carrying Stonehouse products it does not and has no intention of doing so, though the kitchen store a couple of blocks away on Castro does. I also noticed Stonehouse just opened a new store on 4th Berkeley to supplement their Ferry building location.
