Even more beef in the burbs - Photo's

JoelF | May 14, 2004 06:01 PM

This time I'm staying close to home: only a few blocks to Photo's at Wolf and Kensington in the northwest corner of Mount Prospect (the same strip is home to a pretty good Thai place (BKK Thai Kitchen), a taqueria that just changed names to Rico's Tacos, Sweeties pasta and sandwiches, and a Subway.

I've had Photo's beef before, but I'm trying to be more analytical, and I needed a quick beef sandwich today.

$3.99 is a bit on the higher side for a beef, especially with peppers an extra $.25. But it's a pretty darn good beef. Not perfect, but pretty much without flaw: nice tender slices, not too wet to pick up, not too greasy. The roll (sorry, don't know who makes it) sops up the juice nicely while still retaining some chew. The giardinera comes in a separate little tub, and it's a skimpy amount -- next time, I'll probably pop for double. If there are any negatives, it's possibly that both the beef and the giardinera are milder in flavor than some other places. Not to the point of being bland, but I wasn't wowed either.

I didn't have fries, as Photo's serves a very McD's-like shoestring that I don't care much for. The onion rings were crisp, well done with soft onions in the middle (and a couple 'surprise' fries in the bag).

Disclaimer: I have no connection with Photos other than desiring good food within walking distance of home.
