just thought i'd share what i did on the recent warm & sunny thursday. after going early to the sublime gerhard richter show at MOMA, i parted ways with my spouse and headed out to corona. it was lunch and somehow i remembered that it was roast pork hero day at LEO'S LATTICINI, of which i'd never had the pleasure. don't ask, chowhounds just know these things.
wow! the hero of my dreams! dare i say it puts LEO'S 'momma's special' hero to shame? sliced roast pork, airy fresh mozarella on a crusty sesame hero roll. "you want the red peppers and mushrooms on that right?" ooooh yeah. "and the gravy too then?" umm hmm. fyi--the gravy is vineger and oil. you can sit next door in MAMA'S PICNIC store to eat. "Just clean up after yourself ok honey?" no problem. those ladies are the nicest in the world at LEO'S.
although i was about to burst, i strolled over in the warm sun to the LEMON ICE KING. yes open all year. the man himself was very animated that day, in his chair as always and talking excitedly to his single young & respectful--yet disinterested--employee. "...yeah i tell ya they do it once a year. they ride from bensonhurst all the way out to montauk point. all the way. once a year they do this." while making my pistachio ice, the kid says, "so then they ride back?" "oooooh f--- no! they take the train. what do you think they are stupid?" the kid rolls his eyes at me. i could barely hold back from laughing.
lucky the little square on 108th & corona ave. is under construction, if i sat down there i might never have gotten up. i walked back to roosevelt oohing and ahhing aloud with my tasty ice. then i hiked it back to 74th/bway, popping in everywhere i could along the way, before i got on the train and went home. i'm still full, but what a fine afternoon.
