Seems the world has finally realized Beaujolais nouveau for the marketing scam it is.
According to today's NY Times, France's Lyon Mag recently labeled the plonk "vin de merde" (and got sued for its accuracy). Last year, local vineyards actually produced more Beauj nouv -- the equivalent of 13 million bottles worth -- than anyone was willing to drink. They had little choice but to convert the excess to vinegar and industrial alcohol -- a fitting fate.
Buyer beware: Beauj nouv has become crummy swill. Don't believe the hype (and the French are masters of PR). If you're looking for a nice, cheap red, plenty of better choices from Chile, Argentina, Australia, etc.
