The Wife, my 4 and 2 year old, and I have had enough of winter, though its been a fairly tame one, we have cabin and spring fever. So this past weekend we headed down to point pleasant and took the kids to Jenkinsons Aquarium. We followed up with an early dinner one town over at the Bayou Cafe in Manasquan located between Levitt's and the Osprey (My old stomping grounds in my youth)
Even with NYC in our Backyards where virtually every cuisine is at your fingertips, Cajun is hard to come by. We had a great dinner here. IMHO It pretty genuine when they not only have crawfish but Tasso Ham.
On the table they serve warm cheese bread stick thingies, with olive oil to dip in, just OK and my personal favorite fried plantains, really good. App's We had 2 orders of their Signature BBQ Shrimp, (one served as my daughters entree) Really good, with shrimp swimming in BBQ sauce a top caramelized onions and a Crawfish Etouffe which I really enjoyed
Entree's I had good ole traditional Cajun Fried/Blackened Catfish served with Sweet potato Fries. Great simple dish. I would have preferred a little more heat, which they were willing to accommodate but my 2 year old was having some and I didn't want to set his mouth on fire. Fries were great too, freshly cut and sweet.
My Wife had their CrabCakes. She enjoyed them as did my 2 year old after he had enough of my catfish. I thought they were middle range, a little too breadsy, I prefer more crab. Last time she had the jambalaya which was stellar.
Tables are a little tight bit it has a cozy warm feeling. The only thing missing was the hurricane's as it is BYO.
Bayou Cafe is now Definitely on my NJ goto Cajun list along with Drews. (If you ever find yourself in Bellmore Long Island I'd also recommend Big Fun at the Bayou)
