Basic Oakland recommendations--help!

Missy P. | Jul 23, 200209:16 PM

I know this is bad form for Chowhound message board rules, but I am really having trouble navigating the postings for basic advice. I apologize in advance!

Here's the deal: I moved to the East Bay (from SF) a few months ago and also just recently acquired a car. I was previously a Mission chick chowhounding by public transit, my bike or my two feet. Now I am motorized, excited, and...confused. I am not sure where to go. Where are the places that I can now get to that would have been too much of a pain before?

Furthermore, I don't even know the basics about East Bay eats. I live in the Fruitvale area and I know the various taco trucks like the bulge in my overstuffed stomach--and I'm a fan of Berkeley Bowl (except the lines) and Kirala. BUT, I don't know much about other East Bay destinations. Of course, I've got A Cote and Chez Panisse on my list (but I'm looking for more moderately priced suggestions, please!), as well as some chaat places in Berkeley. But, beyond that, I'm lost. Can anyone give me a few basic suggestions? THANK YOU!
