The Barn Kitchen @ Sparrows Lodge | Palm Springs

Melanie Wong | Feb 22, 201806:21 PM

Valentine's Day lunch for four of us was at The Barn Kitchen in the Sparrows Lodge on the south end of Palm Springs.

From the street, the entrance is not that obvious. We opened a door to a small room that lead us to a courtyard then to the barn bar. Note that the only non-alcoholic beverages available are commercial sodas. No ice tea, lemonade, etc.

Beyond the bar is the outdoor seating surrounded by citrus trees and an herb garden.

We ordered four items to share. And then waited and waited . . . almost 45 minutes for any food to appear. With only six other people lunching there, beats me what could have taken so long to prepare. Hummus, $10, was the stiff style and surprisingly spicy, served with hard-cooked egg and stale flatbread that reminded me of what Trader Joe's sells. Ham + Mustard Melt, $15, had a scant amount of smoked ham and gruyere, and was not improved by the smear of almond butter on the grilled sprouted bread. Vegetables, $13, served four fat grilled asparagus spears, a load of unpleasantly sharp and vinegary cauliflower, and raw radishes and baby bells with a nice green goddess dressing.

Best of the four dishes was the Fruit + Burrata, $14, that promised seasonal on the menu, but instead served winter pears, pineapple and kiwi fruits with out-of-season fresh berries. Fruit quality aside, I did take to the combination of sweetness with the creamy burrata drizzled with olive oil.

More waiting when we ordered two cookie plates. These are baked to order to be served hot and at their freshest, we were informed. After 20+ minutes of waiting and asking twice on progress, we finally received our tepid sea salt chocolate cookies. How tepid? Well, the chocolate chips had firmed up and were no longer melted.

The Barn Kitchen's menu of very average food is rather limited, the service is flaky, and the kitchen is slow. The setting is quite pleasant, fortunately, as our lunch stretched to more than two hours, mostly waiting and waiting for our food or to flag down a server.
