Friday night, ventured to Newhall with good ol mom to support our favorite Blues band, Fat Danny and the Hard Tymz at The Barbeque Club, Louisiana Style BBQ Creole/Cajun Cuisine. We have been there several times before and I have ordered the crab cakes, fried catfish nuggets, Louisiana BBQ hot link sandwich and sweet potato pie. All of which are very, very good.
So, on Friday it was between the fried chicken (people at the adjoining table had ordered it and it looked mighty tempting) and the baby back ribs. Went for the ribs, since this is apparently what they are known for. Well, let me tell you, they SHOULD be known for those ribs!! They are the BEST baby backs I have ever had! For $17 you get 3 portions of 3 meaty (some of the meatiest baby backs I have ever had), smoky, tender ribs along with a choice of 2 sides. The BBQ sauce is the perfect balance of smoky, spicy and sweet. I asked for a side of it just to have extra! The ribs are smoked with green mesquite wood and then dipped into their BBQ sauce. Pure heaven. If my mom werent there I would have licked the plate clean ok, maybe not, but they were THAT good!!
For the sides, I got their collards and sweet potatoes, both of which I get pretty much every time I go, and are fantastic. Collards are tasty and not cooked to a mush. Sweet potatoes are sweet (but not too sweet) and heavenly!! They serve their sides in little cups so the juices do not run all over the place, which I appreciate.
Mom got the fried catfish nuggets appetizer which are seasoned with Cajun spices and then deep fried. They are served with a Cajun aioli (spicy) delish!
They serve beer and wine and have several other items. See attached link for menu.
Fridays they have blues and Saturdays they have jazz bands playing. I know for a fact that it can get pretty busy on both of those nights, so reservations are recommended - and they don't charge a cover! It is located in a strip mall on the corner of Bouquet & Soledad Cyn behind a Del Taco, across the street from K-Mart.
The restaurant is nothing special to speak of regular run of the mill tables and chairs and no decorations, unless you count the signed head shots and other items that adorn one of the walls. I believe this is due to the fact that they do a lot of catering and a bang-up to-go business. Service is by no means overly-friendly and can at times be almost brusque especially if they are horribly busy, as they were on Friday. It took us 45 minutes to get a table during which time I discovered a great little Chinese grocer in the same strip mall and shopped a little. However, for the quality and flavor of this food, I am willing to be lenient and overlook this. They do keep your iced tea and soft drink glasses filled, though.
I would definitely recommend The Barbecue Club to anyone who appreciates good Louisiana-style cue as well as Creole/Cajun cuisine. The place may not look like much, but as I have found with other delicious food, sometimes the little hole-in-the-walls have amazing things to offer if you are willing to give them a try. You should definitely give this place a try!
