I'm not a connoisseur of barbecue, but I do sometimes get a craving for barbecued ribs. When I do, the place I go to in Champaign-Urbana is Ye Olde Hickory Pit Barbeque, on First and Green in Champaign (359-3311). (Don't be put off by the name: it used to be a donut shop, I think, and still sells donuts). I can't say how the ribs compare to classic ribs elsewhere (though I'd say they're better than just about any ribs I've had at "real" restaurants) but they're meaty and flavorful, so much so that they're still good even without the sauce, which is served on the side. The sauce itself comes in mild, medium and hot varieties. Even the hot variety isn't really hot, but it's still spicy and good. They also serve great hush puppies and very good old-fashioned donuts.
Unfortunately, they're only open for breakfast and lunch right now (it seems to be a seasonal thing), and they only have ribs on Fridays and Saturdays, and not always then (I think they're closed on Sunday, though I'm not sure). But they always have rib tips, which are good too, although not as good as the ribs.
