THAT BAR on Smith Street

mig | Jul 24, 2002 04:13 PM

I made my first trip to THAT BAR on Smith Street last night. There is a smallish menu, less than 20 items, but singularly uninspiring... which is difficult to justify on a strip with so much terrific food, most of it very affordable.

They were out of the potato fritter appetizer I wanted, so I settled for "sexy fries," which were nothing but frozen waffle-cut potatoes. Not so sexy. The mojito was dreadful - made right in front of me with packets of granulated sugar (!) and seriously lax in the mint department. (When I discussed this with the owner, he smiled politely but didn't offer to replace it!) The pasta of the day was extremely amateur, and the "pressed peanut butter and jelly sandwich" needs to be banned from the menu.

Notably, hardly anybody was eating.

It's a nice vibe in there, decor-wise, and I want to support any gay joints in the nabe, but they're going to have to work a LOT harder to get me back.
