Banquet hall tipping - when guest thinks servers are getting it, but owners pocket all...

I am a server at a banquet hall, we do wedding, birthday parties, seminars, etc...

I make $22/hr on the books ( not complaining )

Once in a while, the host of a party will go around themselves and hand out cash tips to us servers. Always a nice surprise.

A lot of the time, when the hosts gets the bill at the end of the event, they will ask the owner if the tip is included. He always answers " there is a 20% amenities fee included " Sometimes the guest asks again, because they are confused by his answer. He will tell them " part of the 20% goes to paying the staff, and we make a nice livable wage "

We never see any of that 20%

I am happy with $22/hr

BUT its not fair if the guest THINKS we are getting a tip and we are not.

Sometimes I give the check out, and when they ask me I tell them flat out that no, there is no tip included for us and they always give a little extra.

What do you think?
