Recently, I had my first banh mi sandwich at Thuy Cafe in what I think is Pinellas County, Florida (near St. Petersburg). I had heard about these sandwiches for years and meant to try them out but never did. When I did, I was blown away by the sandwich I had. It was so good. I looked forward to trying out all the other banh mi sandwiches listed on that menu and others in the area. Then I did try others at Thuy Cafe and at other places, just to get some perspective.
No matter what what the ostensible filling, the garnish of a sweet, slightly hot chili sauce with carrots and other vegetation was the same. In other words, whether I had pork, pork skin, chicken, etc., it all tasted the same.
While I loved the original sandwich which I had, I am a bit disappointed because I thought that Banh Mi sandwiches were a whole category of different-tasting sandwiches, but apparently not. Am I missing something. Is there somewhere else I should try, or some kind of filling I should ask for, or is the banh mi sandwich a delicious but a one-trick pony?
