I am a lurker of long standing on this message board, so I'm pleased to be able to be (as far as I can tell) the first one to offer an opinion about a new place. The place is Baluchi's a new Indian restaurant on Queens Blvd. accross from Sam Asch. I give it a qualified endorsement. First, the food. We tried a couple of dishes that were new to us (we're 74th Street regulars)that were very good. One was a tandori lamb dish called Raan. The other was an appetizer (I forget the name) made of fried lentil patties in a yogurt and chickpea sauce and something that tasted of tamarind. The naan was also very good. On the down side, we had saag panir that tasted like seabrook farms cream of spinach with panir chunks. Totally bland.

The prices are high for Indian food, and they charge you for everything (rice, naan). The place itself is attractively decorated (a minor consideration for chowhounds, but I figured I'd mention it) in what I take to be the style of Baluchistan. They use copper for everything from the tabletops to the handles on the silverware, to the drinking cups.

In balance, I'd much rather eat in jackson heights, but if you live in t he area, its worth one try.

Glad I could share.
