the bakery crawl...that wasn't

foodnut | May 1, 200607:12 PM

So awhile ago I posted about how Mr. Foodnut wanted to have an entire day devoted to eating nothing but pastry, cakes, cookies and pie.

I collected lots of great opinions for East Bay bakeries from this board (see link to original thread below), but told him that he'd have to be the cruise director on this one.

So we are 'set' for Saturday the 29th, despite the fact that he didn't read the thread until that morning. "We'll just go to Neldham's first and then I'll figure out the next move after that." (Did I mention that *I* am normally the cruise director?!? :))

Neldham's: We got an almond Danish, a cheese/apricot twist danish and a bear claw, plus 2 cookies for later. Liked both danish -- fillings were a good proportion to pastry and not too sweet. The Bear Claw filling was not flavorful enough to me. Mr. Foodnut thought it was too much filling for the amount of pastry.

The cookies we got were a marzipan crescent that was dipped in chocolate at both ends and a butter cookie with a ball of marzipan in the center (looked like a marzipan UFO!) with the bottom dipped in chocolate. I really liked the crescent. Chewy and dense with almond flakes on the outside -- I could have even done w/out the chocolate. The flavor of the butter cookie was OK -- tasted like old-fashioned bakery cookie (which is really what Neldham's is)rather than super buttery.

So then we had to take the cats to the vet and when we got home Mr. CTK decided to take a nap (probably crashing from the sugar high). When he woke up, he decided that an entire day of sugar wasn't such a hot idea -- he already didn't feel great and was craving something savory. (I was willing to go at least one more meal...)

So, thanks to all who weighed in on the original thread -- I guess now we have a list to work through on a much more gradual basis! :) And at least I can say that he talked himself out of it, rather than my naysaying an entire day of sweets.
