The best bagels and bagel sandwiches in Illinois, maybe in the entire USA are at a place in Naperville, Il. called Original Chicago Bagel Company, at the corner of Naper and Ogden.
I used to be one of the owners of this bagel shop/restaurant and even though I no longer have any connections whatsoever to this place, I want people to know about the wonderful food that I helped create.
Before I even opened the bakery with my partner Christine I visited over 60 bagel bakeries in 12 states to see who made the best bagels and how they did it. We ended up with a true boiled and baked New York style bagel, crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside. We decided to load the bagels with extra ingredients so when you bite into them you get lots of raisins or cranberries, etc, etc. We have had customers ship them to Amsterdam, Holland, London, England, even New York. It was voted the Best Bagel Bakery in Dupage,County by Sun Publications. It's one of the last true boiled and baked bagel bagel operations left.
I got into the business because I had fond memories of visiting a bagel bakery in Los Angeles called Brooklyn Bagel Bakery with my dad and I wanted to duplicate that experience. I got out of the business because of the long hours.
By the way, the sandwiches are great and huge. My favorites are Turen's Reuben, the New Yorker with Corned Beef, Pastrami and Swiss cheese, the Cheese Lover and the Gourmet(lox and cream cheese,capers,tomato and onions). Try the potato salad. I guarantee it's the best you ever had.
The new owners are very nice. Make sure to say hello to Fred who has been there from the start. People come in just to see him! P.S. this is not an advertisement. I'm actually very proud of this place and want to see it continue. Would'nt it be horrible if only the chains were left with no independent bakeries?
