After hearing good things about the Pearl Oyster Bar in the West Village, my husband and I decided to check it out. On Friday night we arrived at the restaurant without a reservation, very willing to wait for a table. Wait we did--scoring us seats at the bar. These seats gave us a bird's eye view into the kitchen area (which is adjancent to the bar area). When the food arrived, my husband's dish was cold (he had specifically asked if it would be served warm) and the haricot verts I ordered did not come out with my main dish. That said, I kept looking over to the kitchen area to see if they were being brought out. To my disgust, the prep cook (as he was turning to hand them to our server) took a green bean off my plate and ATE IT!!! He then handed it to the server (who didn't see his fingers in my food) who brought the food to me. I rejected it before she could even set it down and proceeded to tell her what I saw. She apologized and brought it back to the kitchen area (which we could still see) and asked the cooks if anyone did it. To our surprize the prep guy admitted to it and said "I do it all the time to check if the dish was prepared right"--First of all they were green beans, secondly--USE A FORK--or a seperate plate. We could not believe that he found this to be acceptable! What if it was an oyster? Would he gulp one down in front of us? To make matters worse, we were basically ignored from that point on (outside of handing us the bill) and outside of the green beans, nothing was comped and we never received any additional apology. The food was disappointing the service was downright terrible and I left feeling quite nauseated after the whole experience.
