For most of the past year, fried Ipswich clams with bellies have been available at Jimmie's in Salinas. About eight months ago The Monterey Herald reported that they were also available at LouLou's in Monterey. The clams at Jimmies were the real thing, and while they were not close to The Clam Shacks offerings they satisfied a craving. Alas Jimmie's went belly up about two months ago.
Today we sought out LouLou's on pier 2. I know the Herald reviewer has had real fried clams, but these were not they. They were clam strips, no bellies, and not adequate for fried clam starved New Englanders.
So once again the Central Coast is without a source of fried clams.
