Just returned from a few days at the SXSW filmfest and my second trip to Austin - what a great place! The whole town has this great, laid-back energy and the people couldn't be friendlier. When I'm there, I feel like I've stepped back in time a bit with all of the 50's-70's architecture, signage, etc.
As for the chow highlights...
Favourite brekkie - Taco Express on South Lamar. After trying tacos at a few different spots, Taco Express was the hands down winner. I concocted my own combo with eggs, chorizo, onions and cheese as well as the el pastor (sp?). Seriously tasty.
Favourite lunch - Alamo Theatre (we went to South Lamar location). I wouldn't make the trip for the food alone but for an overall experience (and a tasty spinach salad with a basket of chicken strips), all theatres should aspire to the Alamo. LOVED IT!!
Yummy dinners - porchetta with rapini and soft polenta at Enoteca Vespaio. I did a whole post about this when I was last in Austin and the return visit lived up to my memories. We also had a pretty good dinner at Sunflower.
Favourite places to have a drink - courtyard at Guero's while listening to live music, Continental Club while listening to a great band, Hotel San Jose courtyard in the late evening and the Hula Hut on a sunny, week-end afternoon.
BBQ - we had planned to go to Lockhart but ran out of time. We ended up being close to The County Line on 2222 and so we took out from there en route to the airport. I've never had a Texas bbq so I can't compare but my general sense of it was...okay brisket (how is it 2-toned?), pretty tasty turkey breast and quite tasty beef ribs. The bbq sauce which they gave us (and we weren't sure what to eat it with so we dipped our beef ribs in it) was amazingly tasty.
Slight lowlights - I tried a double americano at Little City on Guadalupe - no crema, watery, blah. Jo's was hit and miss - one day great, the other day blah, though it's a nice spot to sit and watch the world go by. Guero's dinner - huge portions, mediocre food.
Thanks to "y'all" for your hospitality and suggestions (gleaned from previous posts) - I can't wait to visit again!
