Every Thursday in my family is "fast food night", and we alternate picks. So last night was mine, and I had noticed a little place next to Big Lots in the Home Depot shopping center in Santee called Asion Fusion. Now this location used to house a horrible little Chinese fast food place that went out of business. It's now been taken over by new folks who, I'm happy to report, know how to cook! I'm assuming the "fusion" in this case is due to their preparation of both Japanese and Chinese dishes. I had spicy udon (and I do mean spicy!), my son had kung pao shrimp (very tender and spicy), my daughter had orange chicken (actually had some crunch to the breading instead of the usual sogginess), and my son's girlfriend had cashew chicken (not the typical red sauce, and done without compromising the crunch of the cashews). Interestingly enough, we were served on real plates instead of paper. The only thing I really didn't like was their service of tea in styrofoam cups (I know it's cheaper but it just tastes bad), and the cheap and not-very-good-tasting fortune cookies they served. So they've cut a few corners, but hey - this is a new place who doesn't do a predominant sit-down business. They've been there for a couple of months now, and seem to do more of a take-out business. It would appear from their menu they may be preparing sushi and sashimi in the future, but for now it's listed as "not available". They're running some specials all the time, and we got one entree half-off last night. Anyway, give it a try if you're in the area. I like to see the little independent places make a go of it.
