While eating at Pif with my girlfriend we both remarked that the bread they were serving was quite good. When we inquired where the bread came from we were told Artisan Boulanger Patissier on 12th street and Morris. Apparently the bakery is run by a Cambodian man and his wife who spent a large amount of time studying the art of baking in France. We journeyed to the bakery this morning and were quite impressed. It is really a hole in the wall type place, a sparsely decorated room with a simple pastry counter and refrigerator. I tried the almond croissant which was very good, nice and dense with good flavor. My girlfriend who is more of a chocolate type went for the almond and chocolate croissant which neither of us had ever seen offered at a bakery but it too was quite good. The pastries were 1.75 each. We also tried a small creme puff type pastry which had no filling in it but was topped with some sugar as well as a raisin roll that was also good.
We didnt sample any of the breads he had for sale as we had had them the night before and were more in a pastry type moond, however we will be sure to come back another time. We also chatted a bit with the owner whose name is Andre, he is a very sweet man (his english is fairly good) and he really prides himself in his work. Check it out, the pastries are a real morning treat!
