The cover article in the current issue of The Nation (Aug. 20/27, 2001) is "Slow Food" by Alexander Stille. It is worth a look; you can learn where the Rosso in Gambero Rosso comes from. Read it at www.thenation.com - and while you are there check out an interview with Eric Schlosser of "Fast Food Nation" fame.

Also, I found Edward Luttwak's reflection on beef production in the August 2001 Harper's index very interesting. It seems his family runs a cattle ranch in Bolivia and he describes how he studied the ways US agricultural experts might "improve" their operation. By the end of the article I'm wondering where I can buy S. American beef. Sorry, this one isn't online.
