You've all seen the new New Yorker and Calvin Trillin's terrific article on ChowHounds. Do!
We've had fun spending a sabbatical in a new nabe for us (downtown) and have to pass along some favorites:
Sorbetto---Well what do you think- not Cones- perhaps the chocolate, raspberry and mango from Cioa Bella? (do you think they supply Custard Beach in Grand Central?) Worth a detour- Il Gelatone on E. 28th and Third Av. but not before 3 pm.
Pizza--Arturo on Houston. Great crust.
Pizza Box on Bleecker-ordinary pizza but good garden
The unusual funghi/onion slices from the incomparable
Sullivan St. Bakery.
Gaspacho--well Choppt on E. 17th is very good and Xando/Cosi at least at Union Sq. are quite good. Healthy Pleasures- not bad - and a bargain - at least on University Pl.
Salads to toss to order - Choppt is first choice, Scopa E. 28th perhaps second, and Tossed alas third (though it was the first) - Other views?
Mexican - Les Dos Molinos over La Palapa (though garden at the latter) we are suckers for gardens - see Max on Av. B.
Indian--don't bother with Mavalli Palace the most tired lunch I ever had. But Jackson Diner in Jackson Heights was indescribably delicious.
