I went on Saturday, with my college roommate and fellow CHer. We were going to go to Thai Chili, upon RGR's recco and, to cut to the chase, we should've... But i had gone on a 97mi bike ride that day and was too tired to drive somewhere even slightly more complicated than straight up 27. Bad Hound!
First off, the service was ridiculously neglectful. After we'd paid, one of the servers apologized, but really, where was his attention during the meal? My glass was dirty, no one gave us menus, i had to walk over to the hostess stand to get them, no one came to take our order--I had to get up to ask for a server.
My roomie insisted on the beef salad to start, though I wanted the green papaya. Hard to say if it'd've been better to go that route instead... The beef salad was awful. Romaine lettuce with a few stray pieces of red pepper, rather chewy, fatty beef, and a overly sweet dressing.
This was followed by three entrees. We asked for some to be medium and some hot. Honestly, the only difference in heat was in the amount of red pepper flakes sprinkled on the dishes. I couldn't detect any actual spicing per se. We had the chicken in red curry sauce, which was typical of a sweet thai curry. no complexity at all and basically just sweet as it's flavor. There was also the basil noodles, with shrimp. The noodles were partly undercooked and stuck together or else mushy and overdone. I had a pretty limp Lime-Basil noodle dish at Spice Market and assumed it was the restaurant, not the dish, perhaps, to give Aroma benefit of the doubt, this dish is just mushy? The last dish was the steamed tofu, stuffed with cashews, this was also mediocre, if not downright blah.
We were disappointed, thoroughly, by Aroma. It had gotten an "Excellent" review in the NYT Jersey section. For us, on this Saturday, it was extremely unclear why it rated thus!
Anyone else been and had a better experience?
We're off to Keum Ho Jung on Tuesday and hoping for good Korean! (Thanks RGR!)
