There is a location of ArepaZone on 14th just south of Thomas Circle, one in Union Station, and I think they run a location in Audi Field, the new home of DC United.
These are Venezuelan arepas, served sandwich-style, cut open and stuffed after they are griddled. For Happy Hour until 7pm on 14th St., they offer some really good food deals. Counter service.
The 14th St location has some damn fine food. I got a trio of three mini-arepas, one with shredded beef, one with chicken, and the third was reina papeada (chicken salad with avocado). The quality of the arepas was sky high. In addition, I ordered yucca fritters stuffed with cheese and served with a cilantro aioli. Addicitive stuff, very delicious.
I tried the stand at Audi Field a couple of weeks ago. Very limited menu. The pre-cooking took down the quality level, but for stadium food it's a hit.
For the record, I prefer Colombian arepas, which are often served stuffed with cheese and then fried. I like the very gooey center and the powerful roasted corn aroma. Still, this is a very good spot to know about for a cheap and delicious meal.
