Aragvi update - great Georgian food

Informed by older posts by prima and others, we finally capitalized on an opportunity to visit this place up on Highway 7 near Keele. We have only had Georgian food once before in a restaurant in Prague, and we enjoyed it then and wanted to get reacquainted.

The place is very much a family restaurant - casual, with many infants and toddlers present. Service staff were friendly, a bit shy when asked questions for their recommendations, and attentive.

We started with a couple of cold appetizers. Georgian-style eggplant roll involved silky baked eggplant slices surrounding a pate made from walnuts, garlic, and fresh coriander, garnished with pomegranate seeds. Really nice mixture of flavours and textures. Satsivi featured gently poached chicken in a creamy walnut sauce, with appealing if unidentifiable spicing. Also quite tasty, though it might have been even better warmed up.

Being a frigid night, we wanted some soup and went with kyufta-bozbash. Based on a rich chicken broth, it included a delicious large lamb meatball, chickpeas, rice, and potatoes. Definitely worth ordering again.

We next had the renowned and recommended adjarian khachapuri. This involved a pillowy, freshly baked flatbread, laden with cheese and a slightly runny egg, and topped with a small lake of butter. Worthy of the hype, even if it might have clogged several arteries. Lovers of dumplings, we tried the beef khinkali, which look like giant Chinese soup dumplings. These were quite good, but perhaps lacking the flavour of the meatball above.

At this point we made the wise decision to not order any of the hefty-looking entrees. We proceeded to share a Napoleon for dessert, which was okay but we probably should have tried the better looking cream puff we saw going to other tables.

For wine, we had a glass of the saperavi (red) and a glass of the tsinandali (white). Both were pleasant, if unremarkable. More essential was the shot of Aragvi brandy, which had nice traces of licorice and vanilla, and more importantly had a digestif effect on our somewhat uncomfortable sense of fullness.

Overall, definitely worth a return visit. $130 total including tax and tip.
