Aquavit, which has been one of our favorite NYC restaurants, has recently moved to a new location on East 55th. The new decor is very nicely done; they have maintained the separate Cafe and main dining room concept (with separate menus) and have a large very nice bar area.
The food (we ate in the cafe) was a major disappointment. The only item that we would give high marks to was the herring sampler. In fact the smoked pork loin was so dry and tough I sent it back. The salmon combination was good but not noteworthy except for the accompanying sauces.
The service was attentive and excellent; they were very concerned (including the maitre d') about the pork loin problem. I declined a replacement and they provided us with a free dessert and glass of aquavit.
I question who is actually doing the cooking. They assured us it is the same chef, but the food was so disappointing compared to our previous visits I wonder who is doing the actual hands on effort.
Maybe they are still adjusting to their new location. Hope someone else has had a better experience.
