Maybe you've noticed the giant sculptures by John Cerney depicting workers in the fields on Hwy 68 driving out of Salinas just before you go over the river? That's The Farm, the grower and farmstand where we buy organic strawberries and corn during the season.
It also sells homemade pies baked on Fridays at the farm. Last week we tried a 4" apple raspberry crumb pie, $5.95. Lovely buttery-tasting streusel, bright and barely sweet firm apples tinged with red raspberry tartness filling without any goop, and flaky crust with a clean finish. The undercrust was not soggy, and if there's one criticism, there was not a whole lot of filling, but that might just be an issue in the small size. The pies are baked in paper collars rather than pie tins.
While it's too late to order a fresh pie for Thanksgiving, The Farm has frozen pies available too. The 7" pies range from $16.95 to $18.95. And the fall only, maple custard pecan pie is $19.95.
