Apple Fritters

Actually, I'm not craving apple fritters right now. I made a ton for a New Year's Day party (from a recipe in Claudia Roden's "Book of Jewish Food": they turned out great--highly recommended).

But as I took my first bite of sweet, greasy fritter, I had a sudden intense taste memory of eating them as kid at the Grand Street Dairy Restaurant after a hard day of Orchard St. shopping. (I think they had pineapple fritters too, no?)

So...for the next time I have a hankering...is there anyplace I could get some without slaving over a hot stove? Or have we identified another Extinct Food?
