I just recently finished a delightful two-week holiday break at the end of 2006. It gave me a chance to eat twice at Le Dog on E. Liberty, hit the Broadway Cafe, not one, not two, but three times, the last time including the whole family, make a stop at Pilar's on State Street, and finally eating something at Paesano's on Washtenaw.
The lobster bisque at Le Dog is truly marvelous. I also had a delectable black beans and rice dish that just lingered in the taste buds. After two incredible Philly cheese steaks at the Broadway Cafe, on the third visit I tried Be Bim Bop (with an egg on top). Just thinking about it has got me salivating. At Pilar's I found out how wonderful the pork pupusas and vegetable pupusas are. You slice them in half, add this tasty cabbage and some salsa, and try to eat them slowly, oh so slowly. I can't. Finally, I had the best spaghetti carbonara I've ever had anywhere, at Paesano's. House-made pasta, olive oil, crispy crunchy pancetta, egg, and parmesan, it was perhaps the best thing I put in my mouth, well, since I ate the pupusas. They left out the heavy cream, which I see in a lot of recipes and which IMHO absolutely ruins this dish. Anyway, I sometimes wish I still worked in Ann Arbor. Next time I'll have to hit some of these Mexican taquerias that are popping up everywhere, like Chinese restaurants. I'm gettin' hungry.
