Andre's special Tuesday lamb shanks

I thought I’d introduce myself with the dish that’s on my mind today. I’ve searched back a couple pages on this board and was surprised to find no mention (at least in thread titles) of Andre’s. I've been going here over 40 years and think that for the money (heavily stress this phrase) this Italian place cannot be beat. They’ve always had a daily special but I recently discovered their Tuesday lambshanks. I have yet to find another version in L.A. that can compare with it at any price. This is a shank to die for-—huge, tender, meaty and slow-braised in a super thick, dark wine-y sauce. It is very rich and filling but not fatty, and you can have it over either pasta or rice. I would venture to say one order could theoretically feed two--but don’t really recommend it as you will inevitably argue about who got the lion’s share. Just get separate orders for peace in the family and save any leftovers for Wednesday’s lunch.

Those of you who know Farmer's Market and the Grove might already know Andre’s--it is across the street in the Town and Country minimall. It’s actually a cafeteria—-the only one in L.A. I can think of that’s not downtown and not a chain. So there’s little atmosphere but it’s super friendly and consistently high quality. And again, really inexpensive.
