Amber Review

MM | Jul 21, 2005 01:00 PM

Went to Amber last night (Japanese cuisine - 80th and 3rd).

I must say I was quite impressed (but perhaps it was because I wasn't expecting much?). I started off with the spring rolls with shrimp and mango. These were fine, nothing to rave about.

However, I got the sushi sampler for my entree. At $18 it was a fairly good deal. There were 6 pieces of nigiri (white tuna, 2 regular tuna, 2 yellowtail, salmon), one roe piece, and one roll (choice of either california or tuna. I ended up choosing the tuna, but took it home, as I was pretty full after the nigiri). The fish was extremely fresh and a beautiful color. Also, they really didn't skimp - the portion of fish on the nigiri was some of the biggest I've seen.

As far as service goes, that was EXTREMELY impressive. They were very attentive, but not overly so. They came and took drink orders and cleared appetizers at just the right time.

Also, my favorite drink (right now) is a grey goose martini with just a SPLASH of peach schnapps. I specified that I just wanted a tiny bit of the schnapps. So, she brought me my grey goose martini with, literally, just a drop of schnapps, and a little cup with more schnapps, in case I wanted more. Very respectful. I liked that.
