Took my family to Alure yesterday, in Southold, the building that used to be the Seafood Barge. Its run by Tom Schaudel, same guy as Amano. It was opening weekend, so it was really packed...had to wait even though we got there after 9:30. Some rough edges with the service, (which was exceedingly nice, just a bit understaffed and overwhelmed) as can be expected in any new restaurant. Music was too loud, some of the time...But that's about it with anything negative to say. Great food, moderate prices- same range as Amano, most entrees below $30, in the $21-26 range mainly. Portions are good, and the wine list -all from LI- very moderately priced. We shared 2 salads- mixed greens and Greek....and 2 appetizers. Grilled squid and fried oysters. The grilled squid was great, but tubes only..no tentacles. Its just barely past sashimi...barely seared. The oysters were fantastic- my favorite dish by far. came with a nice lump of guacamole in the center. I had the seared scallops- excellent, with a huge portion of cauliflower and other veggies, including new potatoes. I tried my wife's salmon...delicious. My oldest son got spaghetti with crabmeat and sea urchin. I tasted it....its great if you are an uni fan, (we are) but maybe avoid it if you are not- the uni flavor was very assertive. My other son got soft shell crabs...again a spectacular portion....looked great. The raw bar selection was small....only 1 kind of oyster, and littlenecks. Didn't have any, since I had raw clams for lunch- my son went clamming. Hopefully the raw bar selection will expand. But all told, this place is a real winner...hope to go back again.
