Am starting to gear up to make plans for a possible quick trip to LA at the end of the month. Only been there once before (played at Catalina Club in Hollywood--quick trips to Gorky's up the street and plates of kasha between sets--and the Hollywood Bowl for the Playboy Jazz Fest (baloney sandwiches backstage) and want to make the best of it.
Of course, I'll be endlessly planning and fussing over the minutia of my eating agenda right till the very last minute, but I'd like to start with some preliminary issues.
I had roast chicken at what I understand is a very very obvious tourist destination: Versailles, the Cuban place. I remember it being really good, but it was a long time ago. Do I want to go back there?
Is Lenger's Deli still great for breakfast? Is the waitress with the clown makeup and baritone voice still working there? I adored her.
There are SOOOO many taco carts, stands, shops, it's mind-boggling. Where's a real good, fairly accessible and reliable place to hit for just a taco or two?
I've never eaten that breezy "California Cuisine" stuff. Do I want to go to Spago, or can I better experience that elsewhere? I realize it's not the best food, but I want to see what it is.
