Our trips to the Beltway/D.C. always bring flavorful rewards. Our most recent visit included a foray thru Alexandria, Virginia, the historic Old Town and vicinity. Recommended by the ladies at www.lacuisineus.com blog 'Kitchen Detail', we ventured for the first time to an area of town called Del Ray. We went down for lunch. There was a main strip of stores, restaurants and food shops and a bit of local history inscribed for good measure. The Kitchen Detail people highly suggested Taqueria Poblano on Mount Vernon Ave. It is small, rustic, colorful and as it turned out delicious! My Enchilada Trio was multi-layered, flavorful and herbal. My companion opted for several tacos, priced by the piece, and they were also outstanding, especially the fish. Our sides of beans, rice, chips and spicy salsa were enlivened, too. Great find! Just down a few stores we came to The Dairy Godmother where we shared a big cup of smooth key lime soft serve. After taking a stroll thru charming Old Town's King Street we got thirsty and headed over to Port City Brewing Co. in the industrial Wheeler Ave. section of town. We got there for their opening at 4 p.m. and shared several of their brews. Our favorites: Monumental IPA and Integral IPA. www.portcitybrewing.com
For dinner we ventured over to Myron Mixon's Pitmaster Barbeque on N. Lee Street, back in Old Town. We were told the multi-sectioned place was almost two years old. Still a baby. We opted for seats at the bar. According to the website and the menu, Myron Mixon has had a long, award-winning career on the BBQ circuit. Winner of more than 220 Grand Championships, BBQ Hall of Fame inductee, and New York Times Bestselling author. That's a long list of credentials coming in, so we were really anticipating something big.
We started with an order of 6 Hot Sauce Wings. Followed with two big combo BBQ Plates, served with choice of two fixin's and house pickles: southern staple cole slaw and collard greens. Baby Back Ribs and Beef Brisket. Well, after all was said and done we were good, not great. The wings were average size, nothing special. The meats tended to be a tad too dry, overcooked. Our sides went fast, though. A couple of Founder's Ales helped wash it all down. For dessert we shared a generous individual-sized Pecan Pie.
