FYI, I stopped by Mario & Gino's, the ice cream parlor in Roscoe Village, next door to the Village Tap, which formerly served only Double Rainbow ice cream. It's still a bare-bones operation, but now has several selections of Al Gelato brand gelato. I had a cone with pistachio and burnt caramel. Very good. And, sad as I am to admit it, better than the uneven fare at the Penguin of a few days prior. (I'm still rooting for the genuinely wonderful Penguin family -- the old guy that gives out freebies, the peaches and cream ice cream girl and her toddlers -- but they need a new freezer or something. It's all too apparent that some of the gelato has gone from liquid to solid and back more times than it should.) Anyway, I know that the old timers will tell us that the current Al Gelato product pales in comparison to that offered in, say, 1985. However, I'm not complaining about having the new al Gelato available for a post-Village Tap burgers-and-beer (or post Hot Doug's sausage and fries). Pretty good house made Italian ice (lemonade only) too.
