Advice: Whipped Cream Frosting

I recently made a "Cleveland-style" cassata cake and topped it with a whipped cream topping (into which I stirred a little bit of dissolved gelatin for stability). It was quite good, but does anyone have any suggestions for making it more frosting like? This was my first home-made cake in a decade and I want to bake it again in a few weeks.
