Advice about induction safety please?

Hi, I'm planning a new kitchen & would love some advice from induction users. I'm thinking of installing a 2 zone induction hob next to a 4 burner gas range. Husband (who does most of the cooking) won't budge on keeping the gas. But I want induction capability. Question is, for anyone who uses it: does it really function like counter space when not in use? There isn't a ton of counter room next to the range (~24" each side); the hob is 12" wide & it looks like it sticks up about 1/4". Do you think it will get in the way? Also, most of our cookware is cast iron - it can't just come on or anything, right, if a pot is set down on it? Also, how would you position it - right up against the range, towards the other end of the counter, or in the middle? Or - does it just not sound like a bad idea? Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you!
