Ad Hoc Valentines dinner review

We went to Ad Hoc for Valentines dinner. It was our first time there and we were looking forward to trying it because we loved the French Laundry. The service and setting were good but the food was disappointing. My biggest complaint is that the food was overly heavy. We all know restaurants add lots of butter to make food taste good, but I felt like at our dinner they went overboard and it had a negative effect on the food and on our dinner. Everything was saturated with fat and heavy. I found myself craving a fresh salad in the middle of dinner. We wont be returning. Here is a breakdown of the dinner:

Cauliflower soup: A very good start to the meal. Very rich and creamy and tasty.

Main course was surf and turf with steak and lobster. The lobster was a lobster tail with root vegetables. Both were swimming in an overly heavy sauce that tasted like 100% butter. Bland and disappointing. The steak was tough (surprising because it was rare) and tasteless. Also disappointing. The potatoes underneath the steak were very tasty.

The next course was a grilled cheese sandwich with gruyere cheese. The gruyere cheese was tasty but the sandwich was so saturated with grease it was translucent. Another dish ruined with too much grease.

The dessert was a vanilla milkshake with chocolate syrup and chocolate chip cookies. The cookies tasted exactly like cookies you might make if you bought a premix at Safeway. The shake itself was good but was too overwhelmingly rich after everything else that was served.
