Delighted to confirm by phone that Abas Hamidi Afghan Cuisine in Concord has re-opened. I had tried it in February, when it was nine months old. This Afghani hole in the wall is definitely a find. Low prices and big portions of deceptively simple home style food made with love by the friendly matron.
I could hear sounds like dough being slapped on a table emanating from the kitchen. Turns out all the breads and even the thin wrappers for the Mantu dumplings are handmade in house. I had puzzled over the mantu because besides serving *14* on a plate for only $9.99, these are bigger than typical around here. Notably, the dimensions outsize the machined wonton wrappers other places use. And they’re very thin and elastic, filled with ground beef and onion, then double-sauced with tomato-yellow peas and silky yogurt with dried mint. Mystery solved when I inquired and learned she uses a rolling pin to make these herself. Mighty impressive.
That Beef sambosa, $1.99, has the same filling with added cilantro. The crisp and airy baked pastry shell is a hair thicker than Moroccan warqa. So good with the two spicy condiments.
The house-baked Afghani bread came out of the oven as I paid the bill. She apologized that it wasn’t ready earlier and insisted on sending me off with two warm slices.
Besides the delicious Central Asian food, I admit to liking being fussed over by a mother hen. She was surprised that I knew all the dishes on her menu. She said I have to come back for her dessert and tea. And when I mentioned that Chapli kabob is my favorite and my regret in not ordering it, she said next time she will make one for me for free since I like them. I don't accept comps, but I'll definitely be ordering the chapli the next time I'm in the area. Btw, prices include sales tax, so $12 bought enough for two meals. Such a deal.
